Baum, Dr. Henry Lerner "Hank" , a lifetime Newburgh N.Y. resident, died August 28, 2004 at home after fighting a brave battle with diabetes and resulting heart disease. He was 70 years old. The son of Dr. Samuel H. Baum and Annette Lerner Baum, he was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh on August 10, 1934. Our father was a true gentleman, whose professionalism, dedication and attention to all of the people he had the privilege to care for, will be greatly missed. His patience, courage, peace and undying optimism in the face of a difficult disease was both amazing and inspiring. Dr. Baum was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Newburgh, having served as president and finally as lieutenant governor. He was a past chairman of both the New York State Board of Optometry and NEARCOATES, served as a disciplinary hearing officer in professional misconduct cases, and was a 30-year member of the Powelton Club of Newburgh. A 1952 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, he attended Union College and received his degree from the Ohio State University School of Optometry in 1957. In 1958, he married Martha Jane McGranaham of Wheeling, W.Va., who had recently graduated from OSU as well. After serving as an optometrist in the US Army from 1957-1963, he received an honorable discharge, returned with his family to Newburgh and began a 40-year career caring for people throughout the Hudson Valley. He had a deep appreciation for the performing arts and was a fan of collegiate and professional sports of all kinds. Dr. Baum is survived by his daughter, Dr. Susan L. Baum and her husband Robert Ludwig of Albuquerque, New Mexico; his son, Scott Baum and his wife Mary and their two children, Juliette and Jack of Poughquag; and his son, Todd Baum and his wife Leslie and their two daughters, Rebecca and Jessica of Walden. He was predeceased by his wife, Marty in 1986; his parents in 1988; and his sister Barbara in 1998. We wish to express our father's gratitude to the many people he came to know both personally and professionally through his life. Your warm wishes, and kind words offering support and encouragement were truly appreciated. A special thanks goes out to Mr. and Mrs. William G. Stratis, Mr. and Mrs. David Worden, Mrs. Marilyn Mazza, Dr. and Mrs. Albert Petrosino, the Markel family, and the wonderful staff at Castle Point and the St. Luke's Dialysis Center. Without your invaluable support, patience, warmth and kindness, the last few years would not have been possible. There will be no visitation. Donations may be made to the V.A. at Castle Point, the American Diabetes Assoc. or the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Brooks-DiDonato Funeral Home. Submitted by James R Formato 65  jformato1@tampabay.rr.com  Tony graduated Newburgh Free Academy in 1952 and received an Associates Degree from Orange County Community College in 1958. He also proudly served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1960. On September 2, 1962 at St. Francis Church, he married Audrey Butler, who survives at home. Tony was a member of the New Windsor American Legion, National Rifle Association, and past coach of the New Windsor Little League. Tony was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend; anyone who really knew him loved him. He was always the life of the party, and always had stories to tell. He told it like it was and pulled no punches, but you always knew where you stood with him. Tony and Audrey owned and operated Valicenti's Restaurant on Rt. 9W in New Windsor, for over 30 years. He made a mean Veal Scaloppini, killer baked clams (the cousin dozen), an awesome steak or the best fish you ever ate. He was a lifelong Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and was grateful for the 1955 season. He was also a lifelong fan of the New York Giants who he cheered on to one more NFC Conference Championship. He enjoyed hunting with his buddies, spending time with his family, and in the last few years of his life, truly enjoyed watching his grandson grow up, taking him to Renegades games and watching him play ball. We treasure every one of the days we were privileged to have him on this earth. We are all better people for knowing him and are thankful for all he taught us. In addition to his loving wife, Audrey, he is survived by his son, Anthony Valicenti Jr., and his wife, Cindy, of Cornwall; a brother, Vincent Valicenti, of New Windsor; grandson, Anthony Henry Valicenti; step-grandchildren, Ashley and John, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and Uncle Pat Tarsio.
