Madeleine Mathilda Busse Haviland, a retired Town of Newburgh Town Clerk and longtime resident of the area, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Montgomery Nursing Home. She was 91. The daughter of the late Charles G. and Mathilda Sahner Busse, she was born April 30, 1915 in Chicago. Madeleine was a graduate of Mrs. Dennisons one room schoolhouse in Washingtonville and from NFA in 1932. She and her mom were the operators of Eleines Beauty Shoppe on Second Street in Newburgh for many years. In 1937, she married Terrence Haviland of Newburgh, he predeceased her in 1960. Madeleine was a 50-year member of the Balmville Grange and was a Christian Scientist. She was also a longtime employee of Goodrich & Son Insurance Agency in Newburgh. She is survived by her son, Terrence Haviland and his, wife Elizabeth of Newburgh; daughters, Louise Fehr Haviland of New Paltz and Denise Haviland and husband, Ted Buhl of Richfield Springs, N.Y.; six grandsons; one granddaughter; and 12 great grandchildren. Condolences may be offered to her family at the Haviland Home at 83 Leslie Rd., Town of Newburgh on Saturday, May 19, 2007 from 2-6 p.m. Cremation and burial of cremains at Cedar Hill Cemetery will take place at a time convenient to the family. Madeleine's memo in her 1932 Yearbook read : Madeleine is a girl whose hair always looks so pretty. She seems to have her work done all the time. A sweet girl and we all love her.....
