Message:

Elizabeth Ann Harrison Saltsman's life of service and dedication to others ended on Saturday, October 1, 2011 as she passed away peacefully in her sleep. She bravely faced the many trials in her life with dignity, respect, prayer and love. Elizabeth was born in Newburgh, NY on July 17, 1915 to Thomas J. and Anna B. Harrison. She was the widow of Willard G. Saltsman, who predeceased her in 1957. After his passing, she devoted her life to raising their daughters and her nursing career. She was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and St. Luke's School of Nursing. She served others as a registered nurse in Florida and New York and ended her 44 year nursing career as Director of Nursing at St. Luke's Hospital when she retired in 1980. Of all her life accomplishments, her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren were her most cherished. They include her daughters: Marcia Raponi and her husband, Eugene of Forestburgh, Angela Saltsman of Newburgh and Jeanne Saltsman of Manhattan; six grandchildren,: Suzanne Raponi (Gerard) of Pennsylvania, Michael Raponi (Suzanne) of Georgia, David Raponi of Stone Ridge, Jennifer Raponi (Robert) of Irvington, Vincent Cestaro (Jennifer) of Newburgh and Julie Cestaro of Newburgh; 11 great grandchildren: Benjamin, Chelsey, Stella, Wyatt, Matias, Siena, Hannah, Alexander, Sam, Nadia and Jordan. Other survivors include her special niece, Kathy Greiner Quintero, who shared her love of real mail, seven other nieces and nephews and life long friends. Elizabeth was also predeceased by her brother, William Harrison and sister, Dorothy Greiner. The family would like to thank Deacon Thomas Neppl and his wife, Maureen, for bringing Elizabeth the comforts of her religion when she could no longer attend mass. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 4 from 5-8 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY. Family and friends will gather to share Elizabeth's favorite prayers and remembrances at 7 p.m., led by family friend, Elisa Zahn. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 5 at Our Lady of the Lake, Rt., 52, Newburgh. Interment will follow at The Cemetery of the Highlands in Highland Mills, NY. Due to severe family allergies, please wear no strong scents. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Elizabeth's name may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, North Hampton, MA 01061 or St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen, Newburgh, NY 12550. Remembering Elizabeth with acts of kindness would also be greatly appreciated. To send condolences or for directions, please visit www.BrooksFH.com or call 845-561-8300.
