Newburgh Free Academy Memorial

Stephen R. "Steve" Hayes - Class of 1984

Stephen R. "Steve" Hayes, of Newburgh, a former Machine Operator for Champion International and lifetime resident of the area, entered into rest on June 15, 2014. He was 47. The son of Franklin C. "Chet" and Eileen M. (Sherwood) Hayes, he was born July 5, 1966 in Newburgh. Steve was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Newburgh. His greatest joys were his first new car and working at Champion. His greatest regret was losing his sight at 25, but that didn't prevent him from being independent and having his own apartment. Diabetes, heart and kidney failure took their toll, but now all that pain and suffering are over. We will surely miss you Steve. He is survived by his loving parents, Chet and Eileen Hayes of Newburgh; his brothers, Chester A. Hayes and his wife Anne of Washingtonville and Paul E. Hayes and his wife Marianne of Totowa, NJ; and nieces and nephews, Jacqueline M. Hayes of Brooklyn, Marion E. Hayes and Chester F. Hayes of Washingtonville. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Orsino, and grandfather George E. Hayes, Sr. Memorial contributions on Steve's behalf may be sent to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Rd., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598; Juvenile Diabetes Research, 200 Connecticut Ave., Norwalk, CT 06854; or American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
