Madeline Dolores Juba Shaw, 93, a Newburgh resident for all her life and widow of George J. Shaw Jr., died on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Wingate at Beacon Nursing Facility. Madeline was born February 12, 1921 in Newburgh, NY to John and Mary Juba. She was the oldest of five children, went through the Newburgh school system and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy. Following graduation she furthered her education at the Spencer Secretarial School where her career path led her to many secretarial positions. She married George J. Shaw in 1943 and they resided in the City of Newburgh. Over time she had seven children where she decided to forego a career and became a full time home maker. She is survived by her children: Kathleen Esfahanian (Sa-id) of Essex, CT, Gregory Shaw (Margaret) of Bluffton, SC, Lorraine Decker (Gary) of Newburgh, NY, Timothy Shaw (Anne) of New Windsor, NY, and Madelyn Jones (David) of Newburgh, NY; grandchildren: Eileen Vittiglio (Joseph) of Lynnfield, MA, Eric Esfahanian (Tara) of Melrose, MA, Kristen Esfahanian of Boston, MA, Gregory Shaw Jr. (Michelle) of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, Colleen Coda (Edward) of Maplewood, NJ, Bridget Kocot (Andrew) of Houston, TX, Kathleen Decker of the Bronx, NY, Timothy Shaw Jr., of Hoboken, NJ, Joseph Shaw of New Windsor, NY, Robert Shaw of New Windsor, NY, Lauren Sutcliffe of West New York, NJ, Bethany Sutcliffe of Monroe, NY, and Garrett Sutcliffe of Newburgh, NY; great-grandchildren: Alexa, Andrew and William Vittiglio of Lynnfield, MA, Eric and Ryan Esfahanian of Melrose, MA, Gregory Shaw III and Thomas Shaw of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, and Vincent Coda of Maplewood, NJ. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy DiLorenzo and brother, Edward Juba. She was predeceased by her husband, George J. Shaw Jr.; sons: James Gregory Shaw and George Shaw; her brother, John Juba and her sister, Jean Marie Juba. For eight years Madeline held the position of the First Lady of the City of Newburgh as her husband, George was Mayor for 2 four year terms. She was active with the Catholic Daughters of America, the Newburgh Historical Society, the Crawford House and the ceremonies involving the 200th Anniversary of the City of Newburgh. George and Madeline were visionaries as they were early restorers of an historic home in the East End of the City of Newburgh in the middle 1970s. Madeline was an avid painter for decades as she was a student at the Bethlehem Art Gallery in New Windsor and also a lifetime parishioner at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newburgh. Calling hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 24th at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 25th at St. Francis Church. Burial will immediately follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
