Willliam Robert McQuillan - Class of 1948

      William Robert McQuillan, age 83, of Anderson, died Friday, September 26, 2014, at Rainey Hospice House. Mr. McQuillan was born on December 16, 1930, in Newburgh, NY, the son of the late Robert McQuillan and the late Mary Taggert McQuillan who came to the United States from Colerain, Northern Ireland, establishing roots in the Orange Lake area of Newburgh. Bill graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1948, and in 1951 proudly served his country by joining the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Bill remained in the US Army Reserves until 1957. During his career, Bill had 45 years of continued employment with one company through multiple mergers of E.I. DuPont, Stauffer Chemical, and Vytech Industries. In 1978 Bill moved with his family to Anderson, where he retired in 1996 as a technical sales manager with Vytech Industries. Bill was a volunteer fireman with the Orange Lake Fire Department in Newburgh, NY for more than 30 years, where he served as Chief and as President. He was a Deacon and Elder at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Newburgh. Bill was a much loved and a devoted member of Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson, where he served as a Deacon, an Elder and a faithful member of the Choir. Bill was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Bill enjoyed the game of golf and was an active member at Stone Creek Cove and Foothills Senior Golf Group until his death. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post, enjoyed ice boating, fresh water sailing, and playing horseshoes. Mr. McQuillan was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 46 years, Barbara, and his grandson, Todd McQuillan. He is survived by his son, Jeff McQuillan and his wife, Lynne of Atlanta, GA; his daughter, Jill and her husband Sherril of Florence, SC; and one grandson, Alan McQuillan also of Atlanta. A Memorial Service celebrating and honoring the life of Mr. McQuillan will be held Saturday, October 4, 2014, at 11:30 a.m., at Central Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. David J. Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall at Central.
