John W. Carney, Jr. - Class of 1972

John W. Carney Jr. of Pine Bush, NY, a self employed courier, and a lifelong resident of the area died October 11, 2014, at home. He was 60. The son of the late John W. Carney Sr. and Mary Grilz Carney, he was born February 3, 1954 in Newburgh, NY. John, like his father, was very active in the Drum and Bugle Corp world. His mother Mary was a twirler in the Queen City Drum Corp and his father was a drummer at the same time and later became a soprano player. His brothers James and Joseph were also members with him in various Drum and Bugle Corps. John became a soprano player at the age of ten and was a member of the Goodwill Ambassadors which later became the Envoys. He was also a member of the Hudson Raiders and the Criterions. He was very proud to be one of the original members of the 20th Century Drum and Bugle Corp and was a long time member of the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Drum and Bugle Corp as a mellophone player with his father. John will be remembered as a very compassionate person. Although not being a veteran himself, for many years he played taps each Memorial Day at seventeen local cemeteries for the American Legion and the VFW. He would also play at funerals when called upon. He felt this was an honor to be able to do this for the veterans who gave so much for him. He loved his home at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains which he shared with his wife Ann, daughter Michelle and grandson Christopher. He loved to garden, growing every kind of vegetable and enjoyed the fire pit with his neighbor Paul Haas. John was really an easy going guy and loved everybody deeply.
