James "Jimmy" Melton was given his angel wings 11-27-11 at the age of 79. He passed away in hospice care in Pam Coast, Florida, where he resided. Jimmy was born on 10-5-32 in Newburgh. He often talked about his fond memories of Newburgh, and always considered it "home." After graduating from Newburgh Free Academy in 1951, Jimmy served over 20 years in the United States Navy retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer III. He then retired from a second career he enjoyed with Kemper Insurance. Jimmy loved Memphis State basketball, and was an avid reader. He also enjoyed living in Florida during his retirement years, and traveling. Jimmy is survived by his current wife Sandra, children and several grandchildren. He shared his children with his previous wife JoAnn who also resided in Newburgh for several years. His children are Teresa Sheppard of Harker Heights, Texas, Gary Melton of Pekin, Illinois, Sherry McGee of Belton, Texas, and his step son whom he raised and loved dearly, Ron Davis of Charlotte, NC. Jimmy was a kind, gentle man who loved giving to others, and is greatly missed.
