Message:
Christopher "Chris" Benedict Munger, of the Town of Newburgh, a retired manager
for Verizon and lifetime area resident, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015. He
was 83 years old. Son of the late Benedict and Margaret (Bardin) Munger, he was
born October 8, 1931 in Newburgh. Chris proudly served his country in the US
Navy. He was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy and a parishioner of St.
Patrick's Church in Newburgh. Chris was an umpire for the USAA Slow Pitch Girls
Softball, a Mid Hudson Volleyball Official, Mid Hudson Swimming Official, NYS
Certified Official of Track, Field and Cross Country, was an Official at the
Empire State Games Track and Field for several years, served as a Volunteer
Official for the Special Olympics, and was inducted into the Fast Pitch Softball
Hall of Fame in 2011. Chris loved his family unconditionally. Leading by
example, he met all of life's challenges head on. He was always there to support
and encourage us to be the best that we could be. He especially enjoyed his
grandchildren supporting their many activities. We lost our strongest, loving
supporter. Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Rose (Burke) Munger,
at home; his children, Kelly Zago and husband John, and Ben Munger and wife
Jennifer; his brother, Fred Munger; grandchildren, Michelle Punch and Jason
Munger; great grandchild, Devin Punch; and several nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his parents and his sister, Joan Neiss. Chris was a very quiet
and private man. In keeping with his wishes there will be no visitation. A Mass
will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, March 14 at St. Patrick's Church, Newburgh.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen,
55 Grand St., Newburgh, NY 12550.
