Shay -
Paula Townsend Shay believed to have died 5/6/80 in Riverside California
after an illness. Paula was married to Donald Frank Shay of the class of 63. and
brother Chris, who may have been a swimming coach at NFA.. We do not
have an obituary for Paula, but from several sources, we have been able to put
together the following; "The Chronicle Express," Penn Yan, N.Y., May 22, 1980
"Mrs. Wilson Fitch of Gilbert Street has received word of the death of her
granddaughter, Paula Townsend Shay, 33 of Riverside, Calif. Mrs. Shay died
Tuesday, May 6 following a long illness. Mrs. Shay had spent some of her earlier
years with her grandmother and the late Mr. Fitch. She is also survived by her
husband, Maj. Donald Shay of the U. S. Air Force and a son, Gregg, age ten, both
of Riverside; her father, Robert Townsend and a brother, Robert Townsend Jr.,
both of Newburgh, N.Y. A memorial service and burial was in Newburgh." We know
from other sources that Paula was the daughter of Robert C. and Kathryn Fitch
Townsend, and that she was born on August 16, 1946, and married to Donald Shay
in 1968. From her death certificate, we know that she died of cancer. Her mother
had predeceased her in 1971, and her father, who was a music teacher at NFA,
passed away in 1990. Paula and her parents are all entombed at Cedar Hill
Cemetery and Mausoleum in Newburgh.
