Marguerite "Peg" Harris McDermott, of the Town of Newburgh, entered into rest Monday, July 27, 2015 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital-Newburgh Campus. She was 98 years old. The daughter of the late Clinton and Ruth Klyne Harris, Marguerite was born June 29, 1917 in the Town of Newburgh. Marguerite was active in 4H growing up, and won many awards at the county and state level. She was lifelong member of the Gardnertown United Methodist Church. Peg graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing and was valedictorian of her class. She worked many years as an OB/GYN nurse at St. Luke's Hospital and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 1420. She was well known in antique and collecting circles for collecting Heisey glassware and local history memorabilia. Family was the center of Mom's and Dad's world. Mom enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing for family and for church fairs and PTA fundraisers. She was a Girl Scout leader for her girls and the girls of Orange Lake. Mom welcomed her sons-in-law into the family as if they were her own sons. When she was blessed with grandchildren, they became her treasures as well. She kept track of each of them and loved having all of them all together at Cape May or camping. Each great grandchild was an added blessing to her already full treasure trove. Survivors include her children, Beverly Mennerich and husband, Ken of the Town of Newburgh, Eileen Paul and husband, Ben of Seattle, WA and Barbara Johnson, and husband, Ed of New Windsor; grandchildren, Brian Mennerich and wife, Dana, Carrie Burns and husband, Tom, Kelly Johnson, Keith Johnson and wife, Desiree, Justin Paul and wife, Emily, Jared Paul; and great grandchildren, Thomas, James, Andrew Burns, Branden, Emily Johnson, Kaci Kuhn and Felicity Paul; sister, Evelyn Anderson; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Marguerite was predeceased in 2002 by her husband, Frank C. McDermott, whom she married on September 21, 1940; and by her siblings, Bernice Harris and Robert Harris. Visitation for family and friends will take place Wednesday, July 29th from 3 to 7 p.m. at White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd. (Rt. 32), Newburgh, NY. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 30th at the Gardnertown United Methodist Church, 1191 Union Ave., Newburgh. Burial will follow at Gardnertown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Marguerite's memory to Gardnertown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Hudson Valley Food Pantry. Funeral arrangements under the direction of White & Venuto Funeral Home, 845-562-6550, visit www.WhiteandVenutoFuneralHome.com
