"Bud" Whalen, of Newburgh, NY, a retired Printer from the West Point Printing Plant, formerly of Siegfried Press and the Evening News, and a lifelong resident of the area, died Wednesday, September 9 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. He was 87 years old. Son of the late George J. Whalen and the late Kathryn O’Callaghan, he was born September 19, 1927 in Newburgh. Bud attended St. Mary's Grammar School and was a 1945 graduate of NFA. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1945-1946, earning the Victory Medal and American Theatre Medal. Dad was a gentle, deeply loving family man who was an exemplary Christian role model for all who knew him. A patriotic veteran, he stressed the necessity of prayer, family and the importance of education. He recently was privileged to participate in the 2013 NFA graduation ceremony, having missed the opportunity to walk with his class in 1945 due to his call to Navy service. The family would like to thank the MANY people who gave so generously their time, love, and prayers. We are also thankful for the caring and support of the nurses and staff of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties and the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. Dad would like to sign off with his famous “Tootle-Loo”.
