Mitchell, of the Town of Newburgh, a local area artist, entered into rest suddenly on October 14, 2015. He was 76. The son of the late Albert and Juanita Mitchell, he was born March 27, 1939 in the Town of Newburgh. Fred was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Class of 1959. He exceeded in Art during his senior year, and studied privately under the direction of John F. Gould at the Bethlehem Art Gallery. In 1962 he was hired as an illustrator at the United States Military Academy and also worked part-time for the Hall of Fame Trotter in Goshen, NY under the direction of Phil Pines. Fred received promotions at USMA, retiring as Art Director in Creative Imaging Branch at West Point after 32 ½ years of service. A man of many talents and interests, Fred continued with his art after retirement and was commissioned to paint animal portraits, pictures of homes, landscapes, miniatures, etc. He also restored damaged pottery, furniture and metal work. Fred was an avid outdoorsman and has hunted big and little game with bow and arrows and rifles. His favorite outdoor sport was fishing and enjoying having the 'catch of the day' for dinner. He also enjoyed gambling in Atlantic City with his wife and crazy sisters-in-law, Joyce and Kathleen, and traveling domestically and abroad. Fred was loved by all who knew him. Fred is survived by his loving and devoted family: his wife Susan (Wallace) Mitchell, son Thomas Mitchell, and daughters Laura Walsh and husband Matthew and Emily Miller and husband David. He was the most proud and loving grandfather of Ryan Walsh, Michael Walsh, Kathryn Walsh and Christopher Mitchell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Clarence and Albert; and his sister, Beatrice. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Saturday, October 17 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A service will be held at 11 am on Sunday, October 18 at the funeral home, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
