Charles John Zgrodek - Class of 1966

    Charles John Zgrodek, 67, of the Hamlet of Wallkill, passed away peacefully at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, October 16, 2015. Born, April 9, 1948 in Newburgh, NY, Charles is the son of the late Charles A. and Rosetta Zgrodek. Charles is survived by his dedicated wife and soulmate of 46 years, Karen Verdi Zgrodek; son, Charles R. Zgrodek of Wallkill; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Williams of Pine Bush; and his grandsons Tyler David and Riley Roy Williams - his reason for fighting so hard and who made him proud each and everyday. Charles is also survived by his sisters, Rose Laverty of Wallkill ; Kathleen Canosa and brother-in-law Michael of Highland; and a brother Joseph Zgrodek and sister-in law Kim of Marlboro. Charles leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Charles is predeceased by a brother-in-law, Robert Laverty. Charles' main passion in life was his family. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, hunting, and camping. He instilled in his family his love of nature. Charles had a remarkable talent of being able to "fix and build anything." Charles graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1966, as well as a graduate of Red Stone Arsenal in Alabama. Stationed in Fort Bliss, TX, Charles was Vietnam War Era Veteran, where he served as a SP. 5 HAWK Missle Radar Repairman with the 5th of the 57th. He retired from IBM and Nielsen Media Research. The family wishes to thank the dedicated nurses of Hospice and the many friends and family who brightened up his day with each visit. Visitation will be held from 2-5 pm on Sunday,. October 18 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, October 19 in Most Precious Blood Church, Walden, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
