William F. Whritner "Bill" - Class of 1956

          William F. Whritner, 79, of Jefferson, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 15, 2015. Born on September 9, 1936 in Newburgh, William was the son of the late Robert D. and Helen E. (Blakeley) Whritner. Following graduation from high school, William entered the US Army and proudly served in the 4th Infantry. After his honorable discharge he began a career in law enforcement and served over 25 years with the Newburgh Police Department retiring to Jefferson in 1981. William was married in 1965 to Betty Lou (Cook) Whritner in Gardenertown, the couple was married 43 years. Mrs. Whritner passed away in 2009 Even in his retirement from the police force William remained very active, he joined the Jefferson Fire Dept. in 1980, where he had served as Fire Chief from 1988-2003. He worked for several years as the maintenance director for the Red Carpet in Stamford,NY. He was also involved with several community functions and given the honor as “Citizen of the Year” by the Jefferson Ramona Grange. William had a great interest in model airplanes and was a past president and active member of the Oneonta R.C. Flyers. William was also dedicated to the Evergreen Jefferson Cemetery where he served as trustee and also acted as a sexton and caretaker for several years. He is survived by two sons: John (Kimberly) Whritner of Hobart and Eric Whritner of Worcester; two granddaughters: Meagan and Lauren Whritner of Hobart with whom he shared his love of music; a brother Robert D. Whritner Jr. of Missouri; his “twin” cousin: Robert “Cliff” Whritner; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. William was predeceased by his wife Betty and brother Richard Whritner. Friends and relatives are invited to call on the family from 5-8PM on Friday, November 20 at MacArthur Funeral Home, 40 Cornell Ave., Hobart. Graveside funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held at Noon on Saturday, November 21, at Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson.
