James Eugene Gene
McDowell lost his 2 year-long battle with cancer on November 27, 2015. Gene
McDowell immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1951 coming over on the
USS America. Growing up as the oldest child in a newly immigrated home in New
Burgh, NY, Gene quickly learned to be a leader in his family. He joined the Navy
and served his new country at the age of 18. After leaving the Navy, Gene
returned home to NY to build a family and chase the American dream. In 1968 he
married Peggy McDowell. The two had two children, Brian Christopher and Tara
Lynn. The children were mostly in South Florida. Gene lead a very successful and
full life there as a car salesman, husband and father. In the late 1990's he
became a grandfather (Poppy) to Kaelee and Kyle McDowell. He was a wonderful
grandfather who loved them dearly, and they him. The kids remember he was fun,
his wacky sense of humor and that he was always happy to be with them. In more
recent years, Gene met and married Joan Miller, who loved Gene and took
wonderful care of him during the last few years of his life and while he was
ill. Gene loved her very much. Gene never met a stranger. Was always kind and
loving. Everyone was his friend. The golf course was his playground. He loved
life, was quick to share a corny joke or tell a grand (largely fabricated)
story, and flash his smile. He is truly loved by so many. He will be greatly
missed. Those who knew him best loved to celebrate life and have fun. He leaves
behind an amazing family. His wife, Joan Miller. His brother Paul McDowell and
his Sister Sally McDowell Chidester. His life long-friend Peggy McDowell, his
children, Tara and Brian McDowell, his daughter-in-law Niki McDowell, his
grandchildren, Kyle McDowell and Kaelee McDowell and a long list of nieces and
nephews and friends.
