Lois M. MacNary Steele - Class of 1930

  Lois M. MacNary Steele of New Windsor, N.Y. "Steele Away Acres" died on Friday, August 4, 2006 at her home. She was 93. Born on May 5, 1913 in Balmville, N.Y. to the late Nathan Stewart and Maude Schwer MacNary. Lois graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1930 after graduating NFA. She enrolled in Columbia University and then went on to New Paltz Normal School and earned her Bachelor's Degree from New Paltz State Teachers College. After earning her Bachelor's Degree, Lois relocated to Newport News, Va. where she taught at the elementary school level. During World War II in the late 40's, Lois and her former husband Myron moved back to New Windsor where they built their families residence which eventually became "Steele Away Acres". Lois then went on to earn her Master's Degree from SUNY New Paltz. Lois was a teacher for the Vails Gate School, then moved on to the Newburgh School District, and then to the Poughkeepsie School District where she retired from teaching in 1978. After her retirement Lois became a political activist and was a member of the Citizens Against Government Waste. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her loving children Richard and his wife Joyce Steele of Norfolk, Va., and Dr. Lois and her husband Dr. Klaus Musmann of Foster City, Calif.; her former husband Myron, R. Steele of North Bangor, N.Y.; dear sister Virginia and her husband Ted Bajgert of Millikin, Colo.; and a dear brother Larry MacNary of Old Hickory, Tenn.; cherished grandchildren, Mark and his wife Lisa Steele, Debra and her husband John Walter and Holly Rogers; great-grandchildren, Michael Clapp, Emily Rose Walter and Hannah and Zachary Rogers. Lois was predeceased by 5 brothers and sisters. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday August 10, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Corner of Grand and South Street, Newburgh with the Reverends Richard Spierling and John Hart officiating. A Luncheon will follow. A Graveside service will be held on Thursday August 10, following the Luncheon at 1:30 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Organ Renovation Fund C/O Calvary Presbyterian Church, Grand Street, Newburgh, NY 12550. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Coloni Funeral Home.
