John Joseph Fogarty - Class of 1931

    John Joseph Fogarty, former Building Engineer, Banker and lifelong resident of Newburgh, N.Y., died Thursday, September 18, 2003 at the Elant Nursing Home in Goshen. He was 91.John was the youngest of seven children born to the late Cornelius and Mary Ryan Fogarty in Newburgh on September 21, 1911.Mr. Fogarty graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1936. On December 22, 1941, he was married to Martha Cecelia Brennan at St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh.In April 1942, Mr. Fogarty enlisted in the U.S. Army and taught Aviation Cadets celestial navigation in Victoria, Texas. He subsequently held the position of Commandant of Cadets and later transferred to the Engineering Corps. He detailed with the activation of the 1870th Engineering Battalion, which he took overseas to Okinawa, Japan. As Company Commander, he was responsible for the construction of roads and runways. Mr. Fogarty was discharged as a Major in 1946 after which he rejoined his family firm of J.A. Fogarty, Inc., Engineers and Builders. He oversaw the construction of several local buildings, including the Newburgh Elks Club, Christ Lutheran Church, The Coca-Cola Bottling Works, the American Legion Hall, St. Patrick's Church and the Hotel Newburgh. Later, as President of the firm, he supervised building projects for the Highland and New York Telephone Companies, St. Joseph's Convent and school in Monroe, St. Helena's Convent in New Windsor, the Newburgh News Building, the restoration of St. Patrick's Church in Newburgh and many residences.Mr. Fogarty was also the President of the Savings and Loan Association of Newburgh and served on their Appraisal Committee. He was a Trustee of Mount Saint Mary College and served on the Board of Directors of both organizations. Upon his retirement, Mr. Fogarty was named Trustee Emeritus of Mount Saint Mary College.John';s affiliations included a Charter membership in the Ranger's Club, the Lions Club, American Legion Post #152, the Hudson Valley Contractors Association, the Knights of Columbus and the Our Lady of Fatima Retreat Group. He was recognized as the oldest member of Local #5 Bricklayer's Union and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's Church. In May of 1980, Mr. Fogarty was initiated into the Sovereign Knights of Malta, a Catholic benevolent society. He was predeceased by one brother, Cornelius of Philadelphia and five sisters, Anna Fogarty of Newburgh, Sarah Fogarty of Bronx, Alice F. McKneally, Mary F. McDonald and Clare Fogarty all of Newburgh. He is survived by his wife, Martha; one daughter, Karen Schwingel and husband William of Randolph, N.J.; three sons, John D. Fogarty and wife Wilma of West Redding, Conn., William T. Fogarty and wife Kathleen of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Michael J. Fogarty and wife Gail of Newburgh; and nine grandchildren, Colleen Schwingel Bohn, Megan Schwingel, John Fogarty, Mark Fogarty, Sean Fogarty, Bridget Fogarty Doxsee, Ryan Fogarty, Sharie Fogarty and Matthew Fogarty. Further, he is survived by sisters-in-law, Eleanor Brennan Thomas of Pearl River and Elizabeth Brennan Erlenkotter of Denver, Colo. and numerous nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home, 318 North Montgomery St., in Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 180 South Street in Newburgh on Monday, September 22 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Rte 9W, Newburgh.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to the St. Mary's Church Restoration Fund, 180 South Street, Newburgh or to Mt. St. Mary College, 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh, NY 12550.The family wishes to express gratitude to the entire staff of the Elant Nursing Facility for their dedication and devotion to the care of our father.Funeral arrangements under the care of Doulin Newburgh Funeral Home Inc.
