Edward Surdykowski went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2016 at Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie. He was born on October 18, 1927 in Newburgh, NY. Ed graduated in 1946 from Newburgh Free Academy and subsequently served overseas in the Air Force during the occupation of Japan where he learned photography. He married Joan M. Berry of Newburgh in 1952 and was the father of five children. Ed's principal work was as a photographer for IBM from 1962 until his retirement in 1992 where his responsibilities included everything from taking pictures for employee IDs to company events to photos for IBM's "Think" magazine. He loved his work because of his creative, artistic bent and because he liked interacting with people. In his non-work hours, Ed was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In later years, he liked nothing better than to take cross-country road trips with his wife Joan to explore the grandeur of the country (especially the West) on visits to children and grandchildren in California and Minnesota. A particularly unique hobby was his love for building model balsa wood airplanes which regularly adorned his home as well as ended up as gifts to others. Closest to Ed's heart was his love for the Lord which he so regularly expressed in attendance and service at Immanuel Church in Wappingers Falls where he was an Elder, Sunday School teacher, church photographer, and willing volunteer for whatever situation or person needed aid. Ed is survived by his wife Joan of 63 years and his children and their spouses Jeanel Donnatien, Carel and Michael Gordon, Joel and Susan Surdykowski, David and Delia Surdykowski, and Ellyn and Bill Loenhorst, 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. The family would especially like to thank Lutheran Care Center 2 South for their excellent care of our father and for their support. Friends may call at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct. on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 4 - 8 pm. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Immanuel Church. Donations can be made in Ed's memory to Immanuel Church, 253 Myers Corners Road, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590.
