Marion Sylvester Romaine - Class of 1944 - My name is Marion Sylvester Romaine and after 89 years of life, my journey ended on January 7th, 2016. I was born to the late Joseph P. and Helen M. Sylvester. My journey began in Newburgh, New York, August 16th, 1926. I attended Saint Francis of Assisi for grade school and moved on to Newburgh Free Academy. As quoted in my yearbook, “If you hear a lot of noise and confusion, you can be sure Marion was there.” I graduated as part of the class of 1944 and further moved on to Paine Hall College in New York City to complete a degree in Radiologic Technology in 1946. After completing college, I soon met my husband, Charles Durland Romaine. I then went on to pursue a career as a roentgenographic technician at St. Francis Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. At the time, I participated in the Newburgh-Kingston Fluorine Study, using radiographs to show possible systemic effects of fluoride ingestion. I took a brief break from my career to start my family. My next endeavor was being the City of Newburgh Republican Committee Chairman. During the 1968 presidential election, Republican Richard M. Nixon came to Newburgh to rally campaign support from my committee. Soon after, I was faced with the loss of my husband. I thrived to maintain a consistent life for my children, caring and nurturing them as both a mother and father. I continued to work and held positions in the Newburgh Housing Authority, City of Newburgh Council, Newburgh Bicentennial Committee, Stewart Airport Commission, NYS Department of Motor Vehicle, NYS Department of Labor, and CETA Program. My final career was that of my appointment to Orange County Commissioner of Jurors. As Commissioner of Jurors, I provided jurors for many high profile cases of the time. I was awarded with the Liberty Bell Award for my outstanding dedication and long standing service to the people of Orange County. Outside of my career, what I loved the most was cooking and being surrounded by my friends and family. In addition to my parents and husband, I was predeceased by my in-laws, Charles D. and Myrtle (Van Etten) Romaine, and many loved uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins. I am survived by my beloved son Charles Durland Romaine "My Charles" and wife Celeste LaBarbera Romaine. They gave me my most precious gifts, two grandchildren; Marian Romaine and Charles Durland Romaine Jr. I also leave behind a daughter and her family, my sister Elayne Briggs of Huntington Beach, California, my dear Aunt Genevieve Hahn and her companion Steve Baran of Vero Beach, Florida and my many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Marion was cremated at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middlehope, New York. At a later date, the family will hold a private ceremony for her to be laid to rest next to her late husband and love of her life Charles "My Shanty". In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Marion's name may be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stonybrook Court, Newburgh, NY, 12550. www.DoulinFH.com
