William "Bill" J. Lynn, Jr. - Class of June 1940

      William "Bill" J. Lynn, Jr., 92, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Saturday January 9, in Abingdon Virginia. A native of Newburgh, NY, he was the son of the late Katheryne and William J. Lynn, also of Newburgh, NY. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen and his sisters: Marion Dewitt and Francis Schorno. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Madelaine; his sister, Katheryne Munday; his children: William D. Lynn, Sr. of Newburgh, NY, Jeffrey C. Lynn, Sr. and wife, Christina of Dayton, NV; Lauretta Lynn-Merrill and husband, Jeffrey Merrill of Abingdon, VA; Michael C. Lynn, Sr. and wife, Susan of Old Hickory, TN; grandchildren: Michael C. Lynn, William D. Lynn Jr., Christopher P. Lynn, Jeffrey C. Lynn, Jr., Eric Lynn, Daniel Lynn, Annemarie Meeks, Katelyn Merrill, Morgan Merrill, Michael C. Lynn Jr., Grace Douchette and 11 great-grandchildren. A dedicated family man, Bill raised his family in their Newburgh, NY home on Third Street overlooking Downing Park. In 1993, he and Madelaine moved to south Florida. To be closer to family, Bill and Madelaine moved to Abingdon, Virginia in 2010. Bill, a World War II veteran, served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946. Although in the Navy, Bill spent all of his military service flying in PBY-5a planes. Shortly after the detonation of the second atomic bomb, Bill was on the team that escorted the then head of the Fifth Fleet, Admiral Spruance, and his staff to Nagasaki where the Admiral took possession of a naval air station. Graduating on the Dean's list at Rider University, Bill completed their four year accounting program in three years and made Who's Who America in accounting. He spent most of his career working in the Hudson Valley for the Internal Revenue Service, rising to the regional manager position of lower New York. After 35 years of service, he retired in 1988. During his retirement, Bill and Madelaine enjoyed numerous sightseeing adventures driving back and forth across the U.S. They also enjoyed spending time with family and friends spread across the country. A church service will be held on Saturday April 23, 2016 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Newburgh, NY followed by a graveside memorial with military honors at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, NY. In lieu of flowers, to honor Bill's frequent donating to charitable organizations, please make a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice.
