Francis Aloysius Maher, 85 of Beacon, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Born on September 8, 1930 in Newburgh NY, Frank was the son of Frank A. Maher and Helen Coon. He married his longtime companion and best friend, the former Monica M. Germiller on May 5, 2001. Frank is survived by, and leaves a lifetime of memories to his wife, Monica Maher, his son, Frank A. Maher III; daughter-in-law, Valerie Maher; brother, William Joseph Maher; sister-in-law, Patricia Maher; nephew, Sean Maher; niece, Meghan Malnik, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Anthony and Barbara Herles, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Beth Germiller and numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; as well as many especially treasured and dear friends and co-workers. He was predeceased by his nephews: Shane Maher and Jeff Herles. Frank served in the U.S. Army as a First Sergeant during the Korean War and was stationed at St. Luke's Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. He continued to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve until his retirement in 1990. His service to our country, and his time in the military, was one of his great sources of pride, and gave him a wealth of stories which he loved to share. Frank was also employed at Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation from 1953 for 56 years until his retirement in 2009. He was well-known for his knowledge of the gas and electric industries, and the employees who served the utility's customers and his unique wit and outspoken method of dealing with both Management and Union workers. Frank was very well known throughout the Labor Movement and served as the longest term President and Business Manager in the history of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and a 60 year member of Local Union 320 of the IBEW, serving as its President/Business Manager and Chief Negotiator for 49 years. He also served as the Chairman of the Third District IBEW Workshop covering the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware from the workshop's inception in the 1960s through 2009. Frank's work with the IBEW enhanced the quality of life for hundreds of employees in the Hudson Valley in the electrical, gas, clerical, telephone and electrical generation industries. A truly unforgettable character, Frank was a loving and supportive husband, a great Dad, an unforgettable uncle, a great friend, an icon in his work, a tough guy with a heart of gold, had a wonderful sense of humor, and had a colorful way of speaking. He was generous, caring, consoling, and a big tease. He especially loved military history and geography, and was known to quiz people frequently about both subjects as anyone who spent time with him over the last few years will attest to. The family especially wishes to thank the many health care providers throughout the Hudson Valley and friends who worked with Frank during the past years, including but not limited to those working at or for Vassar Brothers Medical Center, and the Castle Point Home Based Primary Care Program and Westchester Medical (formerly St Francis) Home Care. Eternal gratitude and love to Frank's caregivers without whose help he would not have been able to reside at home in his final years, especially: Felicita Castro, Emmi Nusimow, Karna Pfeifer, Tayshawn Owens, Maria Cruz, Bridget DiBattista, and Mike Winfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Castle Point Veterans Food Bank, Albany Stratton VA Fisher House Albany or the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
