Eleanor C. Bannon Cornish, a lifetime resident of Newburgh, entered into rest Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Wingate at Ulster in Highland, N.Y. surrounded by her loving family. She was 99. The daughter of Michael and Anna Danek Bannon she was born on February 13, 1917 in Newburgh. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 71 years, Joseph. Eleanor was a homemaker who loved to sew, knit, cook and bake for her family and friends. Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary and would have sent Famous Amos back to the kitchen. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed taking walks and sitting in the sun at the Newburgh waterfront. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Church in Newburgh and a member of the St. Mary’s seniors. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grand mother and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her sister Alice Curry of Middletown, daughter Ann and husband John Rechen of Highland, son Joseph and wife Patricia Gail Cornish of Cornwall on Hudson, son Thomas and wife Cynthia Cornish Packer of Minneapolis, daughter Jean and husband Robert Merritt of Harrisburg. Grandchildren Thomas, Daniel, Edward and David Rechen, Eileen Loftus, Theresa and Joseph Cornish, Zara Farrell, Jonah Cornish Packer, Sean, Christopher and Ian Merritt. She also had 17 great grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Helen, Caroline, Mary, Betty, Josephine and Anne and brothers Michael and Winfield. Visitation will be held from 4pm to 6pm Monday, March 7 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave. Newburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh at 11am Tuesday, March 9, by Father William Scafidi. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers a donation to the charity of your choice may be made in Eleanor’s name. The family would like to send a special thank you to the entire staff of Wingate at Ulster for the kindness and compassion they offered us during this time of sadness. Replies to this post
