Lawrence Edward "Larry" Bennett - Class of 1941

    Lawrence Edward “Larry” Bennett, a long-time resident of the Town of Newburgh, entered into rest on March 9, 2016. He was 92. Son of the late James Harold and Rose Meehan Bennett, he was born September 15, 1923 in Roseton, Town of Newburgh, NY. He married the late Rosemary (Cipriani) Bennett on July 22, 1951 in Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. Rosemary predeceased him in 2011. Larry was employed by DuPont, later Stauffer Chemical Company, Newburgh, NY, from 1946 until 1977. He was elected to the Town of Newburgh Town Council in 1973 and served as a Councilman from 1974 until 1978. He was elected Supervisor of the Town of Newburgh in 1978 and served until 1982, when he was elected to the New York State Assembly, representing the 96th Assembly District. He was elected to a total of six Assembly terms, serving until 1994. He was a resident of the Town of Newburgh, NY, his entire life until he relocated to New Jersey in 2012 after the death of his wife in order to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Town of Newburgh American Legion, Newburgh Veterans of Foreign Wars, Newburgh Catholic War Veterans, UNICO, and the Irish-American Legislators’ Society, and was for many years active in the veterans’ organization of his Army division. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, 86th Infantry (Blackhawk) Division, from 1943 until 1946, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters in WWII. He was awarded the Bronze Star with First Oak Leaf Cluster for heroic action in Vohberg, Germany, in April 1945, when he carried a wounded officer to safety under enemy fire after his company’s medic was mortally wounded while attempting to treat the officer. Survivors include his son, Terrence M. Bennett and his wife Ellen B. Tabor, of New York City; daughter, Patricia Bennett Greer and her husband, W. Bradford Greer, of Summit, NJ; sister, Alice Bowman, of the Town of Newburgh, NY; grandchildren Stephen and Robert Bennett and Christian, Katherine and Charlotte Greer; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Rosemary, Larry was also predeceased by brothers James, John, Robert and Vincent; and by sisters Rosemary, Helen, Joan, Kathleen, Molly and Mary Visitation will be held from 2-6 pm on Sunday, March 13 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Monday, March 14 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Roseton, with Father William Scafidi officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Hudson Valley Honor Flight ( www.hvhonorflight.com ).
