Submitted by Fran Olson Gustafson 1965 <fgustafson917@gmail.com> on 21/Mar/2016 Charles A. “Gus” Welch, of New Windsor, entered into rest Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, Castle Point, NY. The son of the late Bartholomew and Bessie (Beckman) Welch, he was born January 17, 1928 in Newburgh. Gus proudly served his country as a Sergeant with the US Army during WWII. He was employed by Erie Railroad, Sears Roebuck & Co., Newburgh Park Motors, and was the proprietor of Welch’s Tavern in New Windsor for several years. He also worked as Security for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Gus was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be fondly remembered as an avid fisherman and his love for the New York Athletic Teams. He is survived by his loving wife, Rita (Venuti) Welch, at home; his sons, Ernest Welch of Poughkeepsie and Christopher Welch and his wife Colleen of New Paltz; his granddaughter Nicole Welch; sister-in-law Louise Dubaldi of New Windsor; step-granddaughter Shannon DeValentino; step-great-grandchildren Benjamin and Audrey DeValentino; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, March 22 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Wednesday, March 23 in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
