Robert John Masterson December 24, 1928 - March 20, 2016 Resident of San JoseRobert J. Masterson, retired Deputy District Attorney, died March 20. He is the son of the late Frank W. and Marie E. Masterson of Newburgh, NY. His brother Frank H. Masterson (Poughkeepsie, NY) and sister Bette Hughes (Sterling, VA) predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years Kyung Ran (Iris) Masterson, daughters Maria Dickerson (Los Altos) and Susan Masterson (San Jose) and grandsons Timothy and Matthew Dickerson (Los Altos). Robert's East Coast family include (7) nieces and nephews, cousin Georgann Goulding and brother in law James D. Hughes (Don) Lt Gen USAF (ret). Mr. Masterson worked as a broadcast engineer with Voice of America and other radio stations in the NY area in his early career. In 1952 he enlisted in the USAF and served in the Korean conflict. In Seoul, South Korea he met and married Kyung Ran Nam (Iris). After discharge, he and Mrs. Masterson lived in New York, where he joined IBM, and Indiana where he attained his BSEE. He transferred to IBM San Jose as an engineer in 1959. He made significant contributions to IBM while attending law school at night. He became a Deputy District Attorney with Santa Clara County representing abused and neglected children for 40 years. He also worked to draft and pass legislation to protect children in the state of California. Mr. Masterson was a remarkable man, notable for the many accomplishments and scope of his career(s) as well as the breadth of his personal interests. Devoted to his family, he was a reader, an inveterate tinkerer, loved classical music, shared classic movies with his grandchildren, possessed of a sharp intellect, dry wit, abiding curiosity, independent spirit and a keen sense of personal modesty. He is deeply missed. Friends may call from 5-8 pm on Tuesday, March 29. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 30 at 11 am. Both events will be held at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real West, Mtn. View. Burial will follow at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. -
