James R. Crawford 93 died unexpectedly at his home on Schroon Lake on Thursday April 28, 2016. Born June 4, 1922 in Newburgh, NY, he was the son of the late William H. and Katherine (Bell) Crawford. Jim was a retired teacher, administrator and chairman of the Industrial Arts Department of the Monroe-Woodbury Central Schools in Central Valley, NY; and Director of Continuing Education for the Orange County Community College. He received numerous professional awards throughout his career including: Laureate Citation of Epsilon Pi Tau, The American Industrial Arts Assoc., "Outstanding Teacher of the Year for NY State" at Tulsa, OK; a Citation of Merit from SUNY Oswego for outstanding service in Industrial Arts and Outstanding service to Industrial Arts education Award by the Southeastern Industrial Arts Association. Jim and his wife Muriel moved to Adirondack, NY in 1978. He joined the Rotary Club of Chestertown in 1983, spending over three decades as an active Rotarian during which time he served as club president, vice president and secretary. He was a member of the Gift of Life Corporation during its early years, serving on the Board of Directors and also was both Treasurer and President. He was a Rotary (regional) Governor's Aide, Governor's Area Representative and Assistant Governor of the area Rotary and was a two-time Paul Harris recipient and received the Four Avenues of Service Citation for Individual Rotarians. He was an active member of the St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Chestertown and the American Legion Post 964 of Chestertown. As a World War II Navy veteran, Jim saw and experienced many changes during his lifetime, but believed himself blessed by his lifelong experiences of Family, Faith, Country, Profession and Rotary. Besides his parents he is predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Crawford Kelly; two brothers, William and George Crawford. Survivors include his wife of almost 70 years, Muriel (Nagel) Crawford of Adirondack; two daughters, Janette (Bernard )King of Las Vegas, Carol Peterson of Queensbury; three grandsons: Craig (Sharon Anne) King of Henderson, NV, Mike (Eve) Peterson of Hartford, NY, and Alan (April) Peterson of South Glens Falls also 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Friday, May 6th at St. Isaac Jogues-St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Chestertown with Rev. John O'Kane pastor officiating. The interment will be at 2 p.m. after services Friday at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duel Rd., Schuylerville, NY. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 5th at Barton-McDermott Funeral Home, Inc., 9 Pine St., Chestertown, NY.
