Alexander Livingstone Hastie M.D., 85, of Wellington, Florida, passed away peacefully at the family home with his wife and children by his side. Born May 12, 1931 in Jackson Heights, NY, a son of the late, Robert Laird Hastie and Anna Livingstone Hastie. Alexander grew up in Newburgh with his mother, Anna, and his aunt, Mary Livingstone Craig. He married Jean Mary Horn on June 20, 1953 and initially made their home in Syracuse, later moving to Cazenovia, where they raised their eight children. Dr. Hastie received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the State of New York College of Medicine in June 1956. He also received a B.S. degree from St. Lawrence University upon his completion of his medical program under an accelerated program. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Hastie interned at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where he joined the Anesthesiology Group and remained until his retirement in 1993. He especially enjoyed training the residents as well as representing his peers at MLMIC, ASA and the NYSSA, where he had served as a past president. Alexander was a lifelong Scotsman, at heart, taking pride in the fact that Scotland considered him a citizen by virtue of his parents' place of birth. He greatly enjoyed his home in Wellington, Florida as well as the friends he and Jean made within their community. Alexander is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jean M. Hastie; eight children, Andrew (Heidi) Hastie, John (Debra) Hastie, Karen Hookway, Pat (John) Dickerson, Jean Margaret Hastie, Joan Hastie, Beth (Jeff) Silfer and James Alexander Hastie; 19 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2016, at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, Cazenovia. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 2333 Fenner Road, Cazenovia. Contributions in memory of Alexander Livingstone Hastie may be made to a charity of one's choice .
