Robert (Bob) Joseph Lahey passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016, at Seasons Hospice from complications of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). He was born in Newburgh, N.Y., on Sept. 2, 1929, to Francis and Jane Lahey. After graduation from Newburgh Free Academy, he entered the Air Force. He married B. Marie Blair and they had three children — Joanne, Michael and Robert Jr. They later divorced. On Nov. 9, 1968, he married Patricia Kelley Bacon at Peace UCC in Rochester. In the Air Force, he was an instructor in radio and electronics. He first worked for RCA and then joined IBM in 1954. He came to Rochester as one of the first 26 employees here in 1956. Bob was instrumental in helping to start youth sports in Rochester. In 1978, he and his wife Pat became Realtors. He retired from IBM's Developmental Lab after 36 years, having worked on the AS400. He headed up the College Scholarship Committee at church for many years and served on the Board of Directors for Samaritan Bethany Homes. He was on the planning committee for the new addition. Bob's free time was spent in sports. He was captain of an IBM softball team, and also a referee for that same league. He also was captain of the church softball team for 42 years. He was an avid bowler. For 20 years, he raised and showed POA horses, having the Hi-Point stallion in Minnesota in 1976. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Joanne Sable and son, Robert Jr. and daughter, Kathleen Bacon Lahey (Randy) Hollister; grandchildren, Shayne (Fran) Olheiser, Ronica Sable, Melissa, Shawn, Jessie, and Kelley Hollister-Page and Daniel Hollister. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zumbro Lutheran Church, with visitation one hour before the service. A luncheon will be served following the service. Robert donated his body to Mayo Foundation. Memorials may be made to the family for establishing a fund for lung research.
