Mary Hanley Ward - Class of 1937

  Mary Elizabeth Hanley Ward, 97, of Rhinebeck, NY passed away on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 at The Thompson House in Rhinebeck. Born on March 30th, 1919, in Newburgh, NY, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Roseann (Donohue) Hanley, and the oldest of four daughters. Mary attended St. Mary's School and the Newburgh Free Academy. After finishing school, Mary worked for the Ration Board during WW II, Sears Roebuck and Co., IBM, and at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck as a Nurse's Aide-where she worked for 10 years before retiring in 1985. While working at IBM, she met James Ward to whom she was married on October 15, 1955 in Newburgh, NY. James predeceased her on January 2, 1999. Following their marriage they moved to Wappingers Falls, then to Rhinebeck in 1957 and had four children. Mary was a member of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook, she enjoyed ice skating, bowling, golfing, and cultivating new friendships right up to the time of her death. Mary was a loyal and trusted friend to many, she had a terrific sense of humor and made everyone smile with her infectious giggle. It was a privilege to know and love her. She is survived by her loving family, including her three daughters, Jean Marie (Bill) Clarke of Rhinebeck, Rose Markle of Kingston, and Kathleen Ward of Red Hook; a sister, Katherine Witzke of Oshkosh, WI; her seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Clarke, Bill Clarke, James Clarke, Erin Hoagland, Marissa Markle, Forrest Markle, and Cameron Markle, along with extended family and countless friends. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, James Ward, Jr. Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Red Hook on Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 2 - 5 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 15, 2016 at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Wappingers Falls.
