Margaret Mildred (Millie) Haight Leach - Class of 1940

    Margaret Mildred (Millie) Haight Leach, of Newburgh, entered into rest on Sunday, September 25, 2016. She was 96. Born September 23, 1920 in Newburgh, NY, she was the daughter of the late Walter Reed Haight and Mary T. Reed Haight. A 1940 Graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, Millie married the love of her life Lt. Ambrose R. Leach on April 13, 1941. Mother lived a full ninety-six years. She was a devout Catholic with an ecumenical bond, and very involved in the charismatic movement at the Oblates in Newburgh. She had many talents including being an accomplished painter, and a beautiful soprano voice which she used as a member of the choir in St. Mary’s Church and the All City Chorus in Newburgh. She was a life member of Catholic Daughters of America. Her best gift was the ability to make people feel special. She was predeceased by her husband, Col. Ambrose R. Leach in 1989, grandson Shane R. Leach, and four siblings: Walter Reed Haight, Arneita M. Kline, William H. Haight and Harry H. Haight. Millie is survived by her son A. Russell Leach and his wife Kathryn of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and her daughter Margaret (Peggy) Scalzo and her husband Thomas of Newburgh; four grandsons, Thomas (Kim), Bret (Theresa) and Darrin (Michelle) Scalzo, all of Newburgh, and Craig (Kerry)Leach of Mt .Pleasant, SC; and granddaughter Christy Leach. She had eight great grandchildren: Mariah Napoli, Taylor Scalzo, Thomas Scalzo and Nicklaus Scalzo of Newburgh, NY, Samantha, Regan ,Tatum and Rory Millie Leach of South Carolina. Millie was the matriarch of the Haight family for many years and shared the affections of many nieces and nephews all over the United States. She had a special relationship with grandson Tom, granddaughter Michelle, her loving niece Arneita Harris and her Godson Deacon Peter Haight. Visitation will be held from 5-8pm pm on Monday, October 3 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 GIdney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Tuesday, October 4 in Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor. In her last few years she suffered from vascular dementia. Contributions to the local Alzheimer’s Association in her name would be a lasting tribute.
