Pauline E. Carroll A lifelong area resident, entered into eternal rest October
11, 2016 after a courageous battle with dementia/Alzheimer's. Born in Newburgh
February 13, 1923, she was the 3rd of 5 children born to the late John F. and
Orlena A. (Snyder) Carroll. Pauline was a 1940 graduate of Newburgh Free Academy
and enjoyed being on their Reunion Committee for all of their get-together's.
Following her years at NFA she attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant,
Iowa where she was a "Reader" for her visually impaired lifelong friend Harriet
(Brundage) Lovitt. While in college Pauline was a member of Phi Mu sorority.
After college Pauline returned to her home in Newburgh and began her career as a
bookkeeper beginning at the Hotel Newburgh as the night desk clerk during the
late 40's and early 50's. She went on to keep the books for many area businesses
including the former Holiday Inn of Newburgh, Phil Snyder's Economy Cleaners,
Travers Dress Shop, V.S.D. Coat Factory and finally retiring from Nova
Contracting at the age of 85 when dementia/Alzheimer's began to creep into her
life. While in her 70's Pauline enjoyed delivering Pizza in the Town of Newburgh
for her nieces pizza place, Little Shop of Pizza. Pauline also worked as the
bookkeeper for Modjeski & Masters, the engineers that built the original span of
the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. She enjoyed telling her family of being taken out on
the bridge before its completion and being one of the first to cross it before
its opening ceremonies in November of 1963. She was also a talented seamstress
in her spare time. She enjoyed making many of her nieces and nephews clothes
when they were children and patching their jeans like a pro for them as they got
older! Pauline was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church in
Newburgh, a past President of the Newburgh Business and Professional Woman's
Association, a past bowler in the Newburgh Women's bowling leagues at Tarsio
lanes and former owner of Orlena's Attic Antiques. Our Aunt Pauline was the
strong, hardworking, take charge organizer of the family. Her kind, caring,
unselfish ways and helping hands will be sorely missed and never forgotten by us
all. Left to cherish her memory, her brother Walter A. Carroll Sr. of the Town
of Newburgh and his Children: Susan D. Carroll who was Pauline's care giver,
John F. Carroll and his wife Donna of Petersberg, NY, her Godson Walter A.
Carroll Jr. and his wife Kerin of Mableton, GA and Pamela Deming, her husband
Rob and their children Robby, Katie and Carly of Canton CT. She is also survived
by 7 more nieces and 3 nephews, countless great-nieces and nephews,
sister-in-law Marsha Tenny and Pauline's cat, Baby. She was pre-deceased by her
brothers, Raymond J. Carroll Sr. and his wife Gertrude (Farrell) Carroll and
John T. Carroll Sr. and his wife Colleen (Melville) Carroll, an infant sister
Marion V. Carroll and 2 Nieces, Ruth Ann Kurdyla and Laurie Wilson. The family
would like to thank the kind compassionate nurses and aids on N-l at Elant at
Fishkill for taking such good care of Pauline in her last 3 years and also the
nurses and aids on S-2 for the special care they gave to her and our family in
her last 2 days. Your kindness will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers
please make a donation in Pauline's name to Precious Paws Inc. P.O. Box 454,
Vails Gate, NY 12584, a local feline rescue, as Aunt Pauline was never without a
feline companion!! Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 18,2016 from
