Frederick H. Borath of New Windsor, NY passed away on January 18, 2017 at the age of 84. A lifelong resident of Newburgh/New Windsor. Fred is the son of the late Lillian Haas Borath and Frederick W. Borath and was born on May 4, 1932 in Newburgh, NY. Fred graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1951. Until retirement, Fred served in the U.S. Army, and worked for the Town of New Windsor Sanitation Department as a Sanitary Inspector. He was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church, serving as a Communion Assistant and an Usher. He and his wife, Arlene, were married in the church on October 5, 1957, and recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. While serving in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and the Army National Guard as a Sgt. First Class, he earned various certifications including Food Service, and Military Instruction and Facilitator in Leadership. He also received several accolades including the Medal of Merit, The Good Conduct Medal, The Army Achievement Medal, and The Presidential Achievement Award and Certification of Appreciation for Outstanding Service by President Ronald Reagan. He was also a member of the American Legion. He loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with them. His lifelong dream was to own a farmhouse big enough to accommodate all of his family, much to the chagrin of his large family. He had a storied reputation as a prankster, with his wife primarily at his mercy. He was an artist, an avid Lionel train collector, a superior gardener, an enthusiast of old movies, and fan of violinist Andre Rieu. He was also passionate about genealogy, spending hours researching his family treeHe was an enormously personable and outgoing member of his community, able to strike up a conversation with anyone and accepted everyone with love and without judgment. He will be profoundly missed by all of his family, and they feel truly blessed that they had the privilege to be a part of his life. Fred is survived by his wife, Arlene Kristiansen Borath; his children: Susan Hurd of Putnam County, NY, Linda Borath of St. Augustine, FL, Frederick Harild Borath Jr. of Hopewell Junction, NY; grandchildren: Brandi Hulse and her husband, Bill Hulse, Sarah Weikel and her husband, Thomas, Frederick Borath III, Rachel Hurd, Jessie and Hailey Borath; great-grandchildren, Trinity and Kylie Hulse; his sister, Dorothy Doody of Cullman, AL; along with an abundant amount of cousins, nieces and nephews and friends. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Christ Lutheran Church in Newburgh, NY with Rev. Ernst Mossl officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 2246, Newburgh, NY
