Donald Elliott Hurd, 82, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. He was born May 10, 1934, in Newburgh, NY, son of the late George Raymond and Norma Martha Connell Hurd. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2017, at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville before the service. Don graduated from Newburgh High School in 1951, where all the people who signed his yearbook thought of him as a swell guy. Upon graduation he joined the Marine Corps and faithfully served his country in Vietnam as well as other places and also Portugal where he met the mother of his children, he retired with the rank of SSgt. While serving his country he was a Marine Marathon Runner. He also served with the AA in Onslow County and in Key West, FL for over 33 years. He is survived by sons, Patrick Hurd and his significant other Christina Evans and Michael Hurd, both of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Dylan Hurd, Ryan Hurd, and Sophia Hurd, all of Jacksonville, Ellen Smith of Cary, NC and Christina Blevins of Youngsville, NC; great-grandchildren, Logan and Liam Hurd, Clayton, Austin, and Madison Blevins, and Lilly and Calli Smith; brother, Bob Hurd and his daughter, Kelly both of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by daughter, Isabel Fristoe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
