Dolores Neva Mitchell Falco passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at her son's home in Cornwall, NY. She was 85 years young. The last five years of her life her son Michael became her primary care giver. Dolores had rallied from various hospital visits and three short term rehab stays in various nursing homes. Congestive heart failure finally won out. Dolores, or "Sis Mitchell" as she was affectionately called, was the beloved only child of Arthur and Mary Kane Mitchell. A child during the Great Depression, she grew up in the family home on Dupont Ave. in Newburgh's West End, along with two Mitchell sons, their children and Sis's grandmother. Seven people in a small home, weathering the turbulent decade. Sis's first job as a teenager was in the Commodore Ice Cream Shop on Broadway. For the rest of her life she never forgot how to make a superb Banana Split! The owners were very fond of her and years afterward still warmly welcomed her visits with her own little boy. Dolores went to work in the business office of Strook's, a major factory and employer in the West End. It was a shock to her and her co-workers when the plant shut down. She then became an office manager at ETC on Union Avenue. Eventually Dolores made her dream move to Manhattan. A love for train rides into Grand Central Station, and of the theaters was instilled in her by her beloved father. She went to work in a publishing office in Manhattan, making fast friends with the woman who hired her. This ultimately led to Dolores securing an apartment in the Turtle Bay neighborhood, which was just a stroll from the UN. Not unlike the unexpected closing of Strook's, the publishing company closed for good. Her friend who had hired her passed away and Dolores inherited her three felines. Clearly it was time to retire, so Dolores (and city cats) moved into her son's home in Cornwall. Dolores is survived by her adoring son, Michael, plus two royal felines. In fact, her beloved Siamese cat was with her when she took her last breath. Per Dolores' wishes, there will be no visitation. Dolores' cremains will be scattered. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a future date. Donations in Dolores' memory may be made to Cornwall United Methodist Church, 198 Main St., Cornwall, NY 12518; Mountainville United Methodist Church, 615 Angola Road, PO Box 164, Mountainville, NY 10953; or to the Canine Sanctuary, PO Box 52, Mountainville, NY 10953. Arrangements are entrusted to family friends, Mary and Jim Lulves of James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.
