Mrs. Margery Duryea Samuelson died on April 20, 2017 after a stroke in Durango, Colorado. Margery was born in 1929, on the eve of the Great Depression, in Newburgh, NY, to Charles and Katherine Duryea. She was one of the 45+ members of her extended family to graduate from Syracuse University. She married Wilford D. "Sam" Samuelson in 1952, and they made their home in Hamburg, NY. Margery, widowed 49 years ago, raised her children to value education and to be involved in their community. She managed to get all five of her children through college. For three decades she served as a Trustee or Mayor of the Village of Hamburg, during which period she shepherded in a mandatory recycling program, decades before its time. She was on the Board of Planned Parenthood, active with the League of Women Voters, Daughters of the American Revolution, Hamburg Historical Society and was a member for more than 60 years of the Hamburg United Methodist Church. She moved to Sunshine Gardens in Durango less than two years ago after having lived in Hamburg New York for 62 years. Margery loved to travel and visited every continent save Antarctica and South America. She was planning to visit South America before age and health put a stop to her travels on this earth. This final trip will reunite her with family and friends. Margery is survived by five children, Charles (Janet), Minneapolis MN; Kurt (Jean), Charleston SC; Scott (Kim Dalen), Durango CO; Joy (Frank) Hearn, Barrington RI; Wendy Schneider, Knoxville TN; and by 8 grandchildren. Her life was full and well lived and she left the world richer for having been here. A service to honor her memory and celebrate her life is planned for 10:00am August 12, 2017 at the Hamburg United Methodist Church in Hamburg, NY. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Planned Parenthood in Marge's honor. Published in The Durango Herald on Apr. 21, 2017
