After graduating from Skidmore College, she managed a group of ten Consumers' Cooperative Restaurants in New York City. In 1937, Emily MacLachlin married R. Carl and together they raised their four daughters in Valhalla. Mrs. Carl taught Home Economics in Valhalla High School for 20 years and also was a Girl Scout Leader. Emily and George Carl had many international friends and hosted an American Field Service exchange student from Thailand in their home. George Carl died in 1991, and in 1999, Mrs. Carl moved to Waccabuc to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Jack Sinnott. Mrs. Carl was a member of the White Plains Women's Club. She was a life-long Christian Scientist and a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in White Plains and then in Katonah, NY. Mrs. Carl is survived by her four daughters, Linda Kelley of Boston, MA, Mary Becker of Acton, MA, Janet Smith of Chicago, IL, and Betsy Sinnott of Waccabuc, NY, and their husbands; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carl's love of family, friends and nature enriched her life. For those wishing to honor her memory, donations may be made to the National Audubon Society Living Tribute Program.
