NEWBURGH, N.Y. A 59-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a 47-year-old Newburgh woman, according to city police Officers were called at 2:40 p.m. Sunday to 88 Carson Ave. regarding an unattended death and found Tanya Smith in a second-floor bedroom. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner. Detectives and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office investigated and arrested Kevin Cook, who was staying in Newburgh with a relative. In addition to second-degree murder, Cook was charged with being a fugitive from justice stemming due to an open warrant, dated August 2017, from the Illinois Department of Corrections, police said. Tanya Rene Smith a life-long resident of Newburgh, NY departed this life on
Sunday, October 15, 2017. She was 47. Tanya was born in Newburgh, NY on October
20, 1969 to Pamela L. Smith and the late Thomas Jacob Little. Tanya was known to
all as Boo. Boo was a quite loving spirit that with a great sense of humor. She
would set the record straight and make you laugh at the same time. She received
her education from the Newburgh Enlarged City School District (NECSD) graduating
from Newburgh Free Academy in 1986. Tanya (aka Boo) leaves to cherish her
memory, her mother, Pamela L. Smith; one daughter, Megan S. Dasher; one
granddaughter, Jashae Ringo, two brothers, Jerrick L. Lamb (Debbie) of
Charlotte, NC and Antonio Holmes of Colonial Heights, VA, one sister, Shalanda
A. Smith of Albany, NY; one Godson, Donovan James, and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends to cherish her memory. Ms. Smith will repose 10-11
a.m. Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Best Temple COGIC, 111 Rev. James L. Best
Place, Newburgh, NY. Funeral service 11:00 a.m. at the church. Rev. Milton Best
will officiate. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, NY. Professional
service entrusted to Rhodes Funeral Home, 259 Walsh Ave., New Windsor, NY.
