Barbara M. Gross Canzoneri, a life long resident of Gardnertown and Newburgh, entered into rest on Saturday, November 18, 2017. She was 91. She was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, and began her secretarial career at Gallagher's Bus Company. While raising young children, she was a part-time Sunbeam Demonstrator. Later, she began a career at the New York Telephone Company on Liberty Street in Newburgh. She continued to advance in position, and at the time of her retirement, she was an executive secretary for NYNEX in White Plains. Barbara loved animals, music, dancing and sports. Her household always had pets. After high school, she organized, managed and played on a Women's Softball Team. She bowled in several area leagues. An avid golfer, she was a member of Osiris Country Club and later The Powelton Club. A lifelong Catholic, she attended weekly Mass at Sacred Heart Church. Barb was also committed to serving her community in a variety of capacities. She was president of the Optimists Club, an officer of the St. Patrick's High School Parents' Club and a volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, Anton and Minnie Gross, her siblings: Rose, Joseph, Eleanor, Otto, Betty, Leo, Edward, Charles, George, Ernest and Robert; her first husband, Charles A. Marks, and her second husband Cyrus Canzoneri. She is survived by her sister Theresa Waters, her sons Charles A. Marks and George C. Canzoneri, her daughter Barbara C. McGrath, and seven grandchildren: Abdu Abdelhaq, Ally R. Thueson, Theodore C. Thueson, Maxx A. Thueson, Christopher G. Canzoneri, Julianne Canzoneri, and Rose Marie Canzoneri. Barbara had a zest for life and lived it to its fullest. She was beautiful inside and out. She was patient, kind and compassionate. Her love for her children and grandchildren was exceeded only by their love for her. She practiced a healthy lifestyle long before it was in vogue. Her positive outlook on life, genteel personality and radiant smile were her trademarks. Family and friends mourn her passing. Her loving spirit and subtle strength will be remembered by those who were blessed to know her and those who were blessed to be raised by her. Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm on Monday, November 27 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, November 28 at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh.
