Helen Elizabeth Jackson Smith, 93, of New Port Richey, FL passed away Sunday, November 26 after a brief illness. Born August 6, 1924, in Newburgh, NY to Joseph L. and Catherine (nee Murphy) Jackson, Helen graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, then attended Ladycliff College, Highland Falls, NY, before transferring to Kings County Hospital School of Nursing, Brooklyn, NY, where she earned certification as a Registered Nurse. She subsequently pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY, and a Master of Arts degree in Human Development from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ. Married for 69 years to her now deceased husband, John M. Smith, whom she met in a Brooklyn diner, Helen worked in various hospital and public health roles in New York and New Jersey before relocating to New Port Richey, FL, where she served in management positions in various hospitals. Helen retired from Pasco-Hernando Community College where she was an adjunct nursing professor and Nursing Program Administrator. Helen will be remembered for her keen intellect, sharp wit, kind nature, and political passion. Helen is survived by six nieces and nephews: Thomas (Robin) Jackson, William (Patrice) Jackson, Anne (Stephen Murray) Jackson, Patricia (Michael) Gonoude, Ellen Jackson, and John Jackson, numerous great-nieces and –nephews, and devoted friends. A memorial service will be held at Dobies Funeral Home, Congress Street, New Port Richey, Thursday, November 30, at 4 p.m. Burial will be private per the request of the family. Replies to this post
