Helen Dorothy Leathem Curry, 91, a lifelong resident of Newburgh, New York passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017, with family and loved ones by her side. Helen was born in Newburgh, New York on September 28, 1926 to the late Eva Shorter Leathem and the late Edward Leroy Leathem. Helen graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1944, after which she attended Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Manhattan, graduating in 1946. She was employed as an executive secretary until her marriage to the love of her life, Thomas Claude Curry, on August 1, 1948. After raising her family, Helen went back to work for a short time during the 1960s at Wilkins Real Estate in the Town of Newburgh. Most of her years were devoted to being a homemaker and later a caregiver to both her mother and mother-in-law in the 1980s. She then lovingly cared for her husband until his death in 1999. Helen was an active member of the Town of Newburgh Golden Age Club and especially loved playing Canasta with her good friends. She was a longtime member of Union Presbyterian Church in Newburgh. Helen is survived by her son, Edward, and daughter-in-law Nancy, of Newburgh. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Deanna Marie Curry, Alicia Jean Curry, James Nelson Curry, Laura Allison Lewis (Mark), and two great-grandchildren, along with her dear friend, Joan Butler Lennon. In addition to her husband, Helen was predeceased by her son, Ronald John Curry, her daughter, Carolyn Diane Curry, and her grandson, Thomas Edward Curry. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nursing staff of Wingate at Beacon for their caring and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, 44 Balmville Road, Newburgh, NY 12550 or to a charity of one's choice. Friends may call at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue in Newburgh, on Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2017, at Union Presbyterian Church, 44 Balmville Road, Newburgh, with the Rev.
