David L. Joslyn passed away January 29, 2018, at his home in Poughkeepsie, New York, less than two months shy of celebrating his fortieth birthday. Born in Boston and raised in New Windsor, he graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, where he learned Stairway to Heaven on his twelve-string for guitar class and dazzled friends and family as the Lead Player in a production of the musical Pippin. He attended SUNY New Paltz and found fascination in studying Japanese. David was curious about almost any topic. He would delightfully share his knowledge with anyone from the time he became verbal. He marched to the beat of a different drum, often to a wholly different band. When learning Tae Kwon Do, he remembered the moves by thinking of colors. He developed a talent for drawing at a young age. He found great glee in humor and the absurd, discovering one outlet of expression in Live Action Role Playing (LARPing). Skiing, fencing, bike riding, and creating delicious meals through experimentation were among many activities that brought him joy. He was a science fiction fan, not only fluent in Klingon, but a diehard Firefly fan and Whovian. Over the last eleven years, he attended the No Such Convention, where in the first year on March 3rd 2006, he met his soul mate, Janine Calabro. With his encyclopedic knowledge and interest in all things, he was a wonderful teacher to his children. Nicky and Katie also took great delight in listening to David mimic voices of a variety of characters in movies, books, musicals, and from his own vivid imagination. Among those who loved him are his children, Kathleen "Katie" Joslyn and Nicholas "Nicky" Giardina; his stepson, Carmine P. Calabro IV; his soul mate, Janine Calabro; his brother, Christopher Joslyn and wife, Kelly Kingman-Joslyn of Beacon; his mother, Barbara Joslyn of New Windsor; his father, Roger Joslyn and fiancee, Leslie Corn of New York City; and numerous other kinfolk and a host of friends. A memorial service for David will be held at Cornwall Friends Meeting House, 60 Quaker Road, Cornwall, New York, February 10, 2018, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "Cornwall Monthly Meeting (in memory of David Joslyn)," Box 275, Cornwall, NY 12518, or made to Powell House, 524 Pitt Hall Road, Old Chatham, NY 12136.
