Buffington, 85, of Manasquan, Four Seasons at Wall passed away on Saturday,
February 10, 2018 at home with his family by his side. He was raised in
Newburgh, NY and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1950 and went on to
graduate from the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University in
1954. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Rita Gozza in June 1954. He served
in the US Army on active duty for four years, three of which were in Germany
with the 1st and 10th Infantry divisions and the 31st MASH. He returned to the
US and graduated with a MS degree in Hospital Administration from Columbia
University School of Public Health and Hospital Administration. He worked in the
hospital field for 20 years, 17 years of which were at Englewood Hospital where
he rose through the ranks to become CEO from January 1970 through 1977. In 1981,
Jim and Rita became the owner and operators of Haagen-Dazs Ice Cream Shoppe in
Red Bank, NJ for 13 years. Jim enjoyed playing tennis and walking the beaches of
the world with Rita. He also loved singing in choral groups, barbershop choruses
and church choirs. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Rita in 2011 and a son
William in 1988. He is survived by a son and his wife, Jeffrey and Ann
Buffington of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; two daughters and their husbands, Diane and
Glen Muller of West Fulton, NY and Lynne and Terry Gould of Wall Township. Jim
is also survived by four grandchildren: Jared, Troy, Austin and Caitlin. Family
and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Saturday, February
17, 2018 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Orender Family Home for Funerals,
2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan, NJ. Interment will be 12:30 p.m. Tuesday,
February 20, 2018 at Brig Gen William C Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery,
Wrightstown, NJ. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Four Seasons
House and Recreation for the Four Seasons Chorale in memory of Jim and Rita
