Gary Louis Smith, 71, resident of Gray ME, died quietly on April 23, 2018, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, after a long battle from Agent Orange and Parkinsonism, with his devoted, loving wife, Jean Davis Smith, and family at his side. Gary was born Dec. 17, 1946, in Newburgh, N.Y., the second son of Leslie and Margaret Smith. He is survived by his wife, Jean Davis Smith, of Gray; one "best friend," big brother, Allan and his wife, Yuri Smith, of Milton, N.H.; special nieces and husbands: Carol Boyer and husband, Paul, of Milton, N.H.; and Brenda Ruhe and husband, Jerry, of Mystic, Conn. Gary spent his youth days in Newburgh, N.Y. After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army (1966-1968) and proudly served in Vietnam (1967-68). He graduated from a journeyman apprentice school as a journeyman ironworker and was a self-employed welder, Maine DOT, a carpenter, and joined his wife Jean's electrologist practice until he retired. His lifetime memberships included: (American Legion, DAV, VVA, VFW, NRA), Royal River Gun Club, Maine Association of Electrolysis, and Bible Believing Baptist Church of Gray. Gary and Jean spent many enjoyable hours in the outdoors at their Rockwood Campsite, Greenville/Moosehead Lake prop-erty and Eustis, Flagstaff Lake camp: fishing, hunting and boating, in addition to motorcycling. Gary was a true handyman and great fix-it person and found time to RV travel through the United States. A special 25th anniversary trip to Hawaii topped their travel list. They met many wonderful, lifelong friends on their journeys. Gary loved his many companion rescue dogs. Gary will be mostly missed for his wonderful smile and mischievous grin and great sense of humor and the twinkle in his big blue eyes! He was grateful and so very appreciative of the loving and wonderful care he received while he was a resident at the Maine Veterans Home, from both the staff and his fellow veterans and their family members, who blessed him with their loving care. Gary's been to War and fought the battle and is finally at peace! A heartfelt thanks to the loving staff at Beacon Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on April 28, at the Bible Believing Baptist Church of Gray, 92 Center Road, Gray. A memorial donation, in lieu of flowers, in Gary's honor may be made to the Bible Believing Baptist Church of Gray P.O. Box 648 Gray, ME 04039, or Coastal Humane Society 30 Range Road Brunswick, ME 04011
