Edwin Kohl died peacefully among family members at St. Luke's Cornwall hospital on Monday, May 21, 2018. Remarkably, he had recently celebrated his 102nd birthday. Edwin, a retired agent of the United States Internal Revenue Service, descends from a long line of dedicated local civil servants and officials. His father, George Kohl, was the Postmaster of the Village of Middlehope as well as the Tax Collector for the Town of Newburgh. One of his great uncles, Henry Kohl, served as Corporation Counsel for the City of Newburgh; another, William J. Kohl, served as President of the Newburgh City Council and later as Newburgh City Assessor; and still another great uncle, Valentine J. Kohl, was the Clerk for the Town of Newburgh. Edwin was the son of the George Kohl and Emmeline Brown Kohl. He was born on April 18, 1916 in Middlehope, NY. Edwin is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Jean Van Alst Kohl; and his brother, George W. Kohl. Survivors include his son David Kohl, and his husband Ross Rosenberg of Newburgh, NY; his daughter Pamela Kohl Catania and her husband Joseph Catania Jr. of Newburgh, NY; grandchildren, Joseph Catania III and his wife Naomi of Newburgh, NY, along with their children Joseph IV, Gianna, and Justin; grandchildren Michael Catania and his wife Amy of Montgomery, NY, as well as their children Catherine, Michael Jr, and Maria; and his two nephews, Steven Kohl of Arlington, VA, and William K. Kohl, and his wife Mille of Haiku, Hawaii, and their three children Chelsea, Lucy and Amie. We also wish to include two sets of devoted friends as survivors: Karlene and Steve Wagner of Newburgh, NY, and Anne & Chuck Caldwell of Deep River, CT. Born: April 18, 1916 Death: May 21, 2018 They were like family to Edwin and his late wife Jean. Edwin, after a brief stint at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was drafted into the Army in April 1941. He spent over thirty months in the South Pacific, and returned home as a Major in 1946. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Newburgh Council of the United Commercial Travelers (U.C.T.) for 27 years, and was also a past Grand Counselor of New York State. He was the first secretary of the Middle Hope Fire Department, serving in that capacity for 10 years. He, accompanied by his late wife Jean, was a perennial volunteer for the Meals on Wheels of Greater Newburgh. Edwin spent the last months of his life as a resident of The New Windsor Country Inn. The family wishes to thank the owners and the staff of the Country Inn for their unfailing care and love they provided to Edwin. The family would like to acknowledge Edwin's primary care physician, Dr. Stuart Liederson, for his extraordinary dedication, patience and kindness that he always displayed to both Edwin and his late wife Jean. And finally, the family would also like to extend their appreciation to all the doctors, nurses and staff of St. Luke's Cornwall's 3rd floor for their amazing care and attention they gave to Edwin, especially during his last days. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Wednesday, May 23 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh. There will be an internment service beginning at 10am Thursday, May 24 at Cedar Hill Mausoleum at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 5468 Route 9W, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Edwin's name to: Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 2615, Newburgh, NY 12550.
