Robert P Babcock entered into eternal rest on June 15, 2018 with his devoted family around him. His parents were Paul and Frieda (Hauserman) Babcock. He was born in Scarsdale, NY on January 11, 1926. Bob fought a valiant struggle with Parkinson's Disease. His devoted wife Catherine loved and cared for him for many years. He is survived by his wife, Catherine DeLuca Babcock and their five children: son, Paul (JoAnn) of Little Britain, daughter, Kathleen Babcock Lowry of Sugar Land, TX, son, Stephen of Little Britain, son, Kenneth (Donna) of Little Britain and daughter, Jeanette Babcock Imhof (Ken). Robert and Catherine have 11 wonderful grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He and Catherine celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on September 3, 2017. Bob walked to Little Britain School every day and was valedictorian of his 8th grade class. He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1944. He was an important part of running the family dairy farm in Little Britain where he grew up. He worked as a foreman at Woodruff's Auto Body Shop in Newburgh. After marrying in 1949, he found his lifelong passion for automobiles and restored many beautiful cars throughout the years. In 1953 he purchased property in Vails Gate which is now Vails Gate Body Shop and Robert Babcock Used Cars. This long-standing business has served and supported the community for 52 years. He played the accordion harmonica and loved to hunt and fish. He also served our country in the National Guard for 12 years where he was the personal driver for Col. Vincent Dominic. He was a member of the Orange County Antique Automobile Club for 38 years, during which time was awarded the prestigious Distel Award by the club members, and was a delegate for Rhinebeck Auto Association. He also was a member of the Dodge/Chrysler, and Nash/Metropolitan National car clubs. He was a long-time member of the National Clock and Watch Club. After years of meticulously restoring antique cars, trucks and tractors, he won many Senior Awards and Best of Show at the top competitions in the country, including the National Show in Hershey, PA. He loved camping and took his family on many an exciting and adventurous trips all over this country. He, along with Catherine and dear friends, embarked on an unforgettable motorhome journey to Alaska in 1988. One of their traditions for Mom and Dad would be to give Christmas goody bags to children who wouldn't have any gifts under their tree. They delivered gifts to schools and homeless shelter for the past 18 years which was one of their favorite things to do, to help those in need. We love our "Bobby-boo". He was so special; a kind, gentle and sweet man who would give you the shirt off his back. He had a wonderful sense of humor and kept us all laughing over the years. We will miss him. A special thank you must go to two wonderful people who cared and loved Bob so much: Janice Hussey and Maria Ferrigno, and to the caregivers at Elant/Sapphire in Goshen.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Church, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor. January 11, 1926 ~ June 15, 2018
