The Garzione Family experienced a deep loss on Sunday, July 22, 2018. Patsy Patrick Garzione, our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away on that day, at the age of ninety-four. The son of the late Anthony and Anna (Pucino) Garzione, he was born on January 29, 1924 in Newburgh, NY. Patsy honorably and proudly served his country during World War II. He served in the Navy on the USS Sierra, in the Pacific, where he participated in seven invasions of various islands as a boatswain mate. Patsy was awarded the American Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, and Victory Medal and received a letter of commendation from President Roosevelt. Patsy and Marie Carbone were married on October 16, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, where they remained active parishioners. Pat & Marie bought their family home on Sherman Drive where the curbs were always painted bright white, a landmark for all on the street. Patsy and Marie lived happily together for 67 years until her passing in 2016. After being discharged from the Navy, Patsy worked as a custodian at Sacred Heart Church/School in Newburgh. Upon his retirement he worked at the Medical Arts Building also in Newburgh. Patsy could always be found hard at work in his white shirt, (sleeves rolled up to the elbows), bow tie, and dress pants! Duty, decency, reliability, honor, and respect; these are all qualities that Patsy not only held in high esteem, but practiced every day during his time on this earth. This is evident in the various community groups he participated in. He was a member of the Fatima Group, Sacred Heart Ushers, Holy Name Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society, Member of the Lay Council of Sacred Heart Church, and advisor for Sacred Heart Building and Grounds. He served as trustee and officer for Club 60 and the West End Couple's Club. He was a member of the Retired Men's Club of Orange County, VFW, Navy League of the US, and the US Navy Memorial Foundation. Patsy was active in establishing the Catholic War Veteran's Post 386 and became the group's first Vice Commander. Since then he has served as the Post's Commander, Trustee, Officer of the Day and was chairman of many committees. Due largely to his efforts there is a CWV Memorial at Sacred Heart School. Patsy maintained the Memorial until he was physically unable to continue. Cardinal Spellman presented Patsy with a medal for outstanding work with Sacred Heart CYO, and he was named "Man of the Year 2001" by the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Church. For many years Patsy and Marie would visit various Newburgh Schools as Mr. & Mrs. Claus, taking wish lists from all the young students. Patsy will forever be remembered by his children, Marie & Jeff Murphy, Anthony & Donna Garzione all of Wallkill, NY; John Garzione of Newburgh, NY and Bernadette & Jesse Sherman of Coatesville, PA. Left with wonderful memories of their "Poppy" are grandchildren, Kristopher and JonPatrick (Gabriele) Murphy, Jeremy (Kendra), Brendan (Teresa), Joshua (Stacey), Shane, Courtney, Chelsea, and Brandon Garzione, and Andrew and Alana Sherman. He is also survived by his precious great-grandchildren who will miss their "Poppy" greatly, Bailee, Gabriel, Jacob, and Maribelle Murphy; Kasey, Olivia, Madison, Tyler, Ella, Celestina and Julian Garzione and Everleigh Sherman. Patsy also leaves behind his brother and best friend, Anthony, "favorite sister-in-law", Marlene, brother William Garzione, beloved nieces Maryann Rhinefield and Lisa Yeaple, special family friend, Angie Gilbert, many more nieces, nephews, and numerous loving relatives and friends. Patsy is now reunited with those loved ones who predeceased him; his loving wife, Marie, his parents Anthony & Anna, his brothers Nick, Victor, Rocco, Adam, and David, his in-laws, John and Concetta Carbone, as well as many beloved relatives and friends. Please join us as we remember Patsy's life on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 during the hours of 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm at White, Venuto, & Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 North Plank Road, (Rt. 32), Newburgh, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:00 am, Thursday, July 26th at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Rt. 32, Plattekill. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Cedar Hill Mausoleum. Many friends and family have asked what they can do for us at this most difficult time. So to honor the memory of our parents and to continue the lifetime of giving to others, the family invites you to bring with you, if desired, a food/hygiene/baby item which will be donated to The Plattekill Food Panty, as giving to those in need was one of the lessons taught to us by our parents, and we know that they would be so happy to be honored in such a giving way. Proverb 28:27: Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.
