Submitted by Fran Olson Gustafson 1965 <fgustafson917@gmail.com> on 17/Aug/2018 184.103.176.30
Richard A. (Gus) Ostner passed away on August 16 at home in New Windsor. He was
born in 1931 in the same building which was later to become the landmark New
Windsor restaurant, Gus’ Restaurant. The only son of Gus & Ann (Bosacky) Ostner,
Richard married Christine Schilling who was his best friend and high school
sweetheart. Their love affair lasted for 63 years until Christine passed in
2015. They were blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, one great
grandchild and a second on the way. Throughout his life, he held deep Christian
faith and took each day on earth as a blessing.
He graduated with honors from NFA in Newburgh and earned a Bachelor’s degree
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He then served in the US Army
where he was an English/German interpreter for two years in Germany. When he
returned to the States after his honorable discharge from the Army he was
employed by Newburgh Oil Co. for several years before buying his father’s
business, Gus’ Tavern in 1964.
He is survived by his son Richard G. Ostner & wife Linda, daughters; Robin
Taliaferro & husband Sylvester (Pete), Christine Courtsunis & husband John,
Heidi Imbriglio & husband Armon, grandchildren Lauren S. Ostner, Richard (Ricky)
G. Ostner, Peter J. Taliaferro, Ian E. Taliaferro & wife Mary Kate, Delaney A.
I. Taliaferro, George J. Courtsunis and Gus J. Courtsunis.
Richard (Gus) was a Master Mason of the Hudson River Lodge 309 and past
president of the Christ Lutheran Church Council in Newburgh, NY. Making the most
of his retirement, he and his wife were members of Osiris Country Club and spent
significant time traveling around the world. When not traveling, they took great
joy entertaining friends and family at their home.
Dad left two directives at his passing. First he advised that if someone wants
to donate to a worthy cause, he requested Hospice of Orange and Sullivan
Counties be considered. Secondly he suggested to be printed in his obituary,
“All who read my obituary should repair to their nearest bar, raise a glass, and
think kindly of me”.
Visitation will be at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh from 2-5 pm on Sunday,
August 19, 2018. A church service will be at Christ Lutheran Church, Fullerton
Ave., Newburgh at 10 am on Monday, August 20, 2018.
