Frederick S. Masten, Jr. passed away on September 14, 2018 at St Luke's
Hospital, Newburgh, the same hospital in which he was born on July 24, 1936. He
was surrounded by his loved ones. Fred was truly devoted to his native Newburgh
and was raised on William Street. He was educated in the Newburgh and Orange
County landscape graduating from Newburgh Free Academy in 1954. Fred served our
country as a member of the US Army. He then attended and graduated from Orange
County Community College and followed his father's lead and joined The Evening
News and promoted himself, eventually becoming Advertising Manager. Fred was a
Renaissance-Man of sorts. He was passionate for all things new to him. He taught
himself to play the guitar. He became a Civil War historian as well as
developing an affection for all things pertaining to the art of cookery. Fred
also had a soft heart when it came to stray or hungry animals and went out of
his way to make sure they were cared for. His determination and will to live was
always present despite being a 2-time cancer survivor and most recently through
his battle with Parkinson's Disease. His last few years were spent enveloped by
family, extended family and his caretakers at Wingate in Beacon. He was
predeceased by his parents, Frederick Masten, Sr. and Elizabeth Masten. He is
survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Masten, and his loving son Jeffrey Masten.
In addition to his immediate family, he enjoyed a strong bond with his extended
family and especially his "adopted" grandson, Dylan Brown. Visitation will be
held from 4 to 7pm on Monday, September 17 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney
Ave. Newburgh, NY. www.Brooksfh.com or 845-561-8300.
