John J. "Sticks" McVeigh - Class of 1949

      John J. "Sticks" McVeigh, 87, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2018. The son of the late Aloysius McVeigh and Florence Jay (Nee) McVeigh, he was born December 2, 1930 in Newburgh, NY. John was an extremely gifted athlete, excelling in all the sports he pursued, but especially basketball, track and field. He reveled in the memories, achievements, and the camaraderie of his friends and classmates. He loved being in Newburgh, meeting old friends and acquaintances, and sharing stories and news. John was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the military from 1951 to 1953. He was a proud member of Iron Workers Local 417 for over 60 years, as his father was before him, and received Local 417 Locals recognition of his outstanding achievement of membership. John loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fly fisherman, pursuing his passions whenever he could. In later years, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling with family and spending time with his children and grandchildren. John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose (Bugiada) McVeigh; daughters, Cathleen McVeigh and her husband Harvey Cohen and their children Nathan and Evelyn Cohen; Theresa Trauner and her husband Gary Trauner and their children Benjamin and Aaron Trauner; and Patricia Lynch and her children: Erin, Brendan, Megan and Shannon. John is predeceased by his sister Mary "Betty" Parks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105 or the Alzheimer's Research Association 225 N. Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601 Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home Thursday, September 20, from 4-7pm. Mass will take place on Friday, September 21, at St. Patrick's Church at 10am; burial with Military Honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
